How to prepare your pallet for shipping
Proper preparation protects your goods and can prevent costly damage claims. Follow these tips from our freight team.
Choose the Right Pallet
- Standard size is 48" × 40" and holds up to 2,500 lbs
- Wooden pallets are most durable for heavy freight
- Plastic pallets suit moisture-sensitive or hygienic shipments
- Ensure the pallet is undamaged with no broken boards
Stack Items Correctly
- Place heaviest items on the bottom for a stable base
- Use boxes of uniform size to create an even stack
- Never let items overhang the pallet edges
- Fill empty spaces with void fill or dunnage bags
Secure the Load
- Wrap the entire pallet top-to-base with stretch wrap
- Add corner protectors to prevent crushing during transit
- Use strapping bands over the stretch wrap for extra hold
- Ensure the pallet is stable and doesn’t rock before pickup
Label Clearly
- Attach full sender and recipient address on all four sides
- Mark fragile items clearly with “Fragile — Handle with Care”
- Include phone number for delivery contact
- Use waterproof label pouches for outdoor or sea shipments

Common questions about pallet shipping
In the United States, the standard shipping blueprint is the GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet, which measures 48″ × 40″. A standard wooden pallet can safely support a dynamic weight capacity of up to 2,500 lbs (1,134 kg).
Wooden Pallets: Best for heavy industrial machinery, automotive parts, and bulk construction materials due to high durability.
Plastic Pallets: Ideal for moisture-sensitive, pharmaceutical, or food and beverage shipments. They are inherently compliant with ISPM 15 export regulations (exempt from fumigation), making them a premium asset for international trade. Whether you are shipping a single standard pallet or handling specialized freight, ExpediShip provides comprehensive sizing support to keep your cargo compliant and secure.
Yes, you can absolutely ship pallets to residential addresses. While traditional freight carriers often restrict service to commercial docks, ExpediShip specializes in residential pallet delivery. Because residential areas lack professional loading docks, your shipment will be assigned a Lift Gate Truck. The driver will use a hydraulic lift gate and a manual Pallet Jack to safely lower your pallet from the truck bed directly onto your curb or driveway. Neither the shipper nor the recipient needs to provide a forklift or heavy machinery.
The choice between LTL (Less-than-Truckload) and FTL (Full Truckload) depends on your pallet count, total weight, and budget constraints:
LTL Shipping: Best for shipping 1 to 6 pallets. Your freight shares truck space with other shippers, allowing you to only pay for the volume your cargo occupies. It is highly cost-effective for small businesses and e-commerce inventory management.
FTL Shipping: Best for bulk shipments filling an entire trailer (typically 24 to 26 standard pallets or over 20,000 lbs). FTL offers faster transit times because the truck drives directly from your origin to the destination without stopping at intermediate sorting terminal
Freight class is a standardized pricing classification established by the NMFTA (National Motor Freight Traffic Association) based on the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system. It ranges from Class 50 (dense, low-risk items like steel) to Class 500 (low-density, highly fragile items). Freight class is determined by four key metrics: Density (pounds per cubic foot), Stowability, Handling, and Liability. To avoid costly re-weigh and re-class fees from carriers, ensure you measure the absolute outer dimensions of your wrapped pallet (including any overhang) and its exact total weight.
Crossing international borders requires meticulous paperwork to pass customs clearance seamlessly. The essential documents include:
Commercial Invoice: Details the buyer, seller, and transaction value.
Detailed Packing List: Specifies the exact weight, dimensions, and contents of each pallet.
HS Codes (Harmonized System Codes): Globally recognized numerical codes used to classify traded products for tariffs. When you book an international air or sea freight shipment with ExpediShip, our dedicated support team generates and manages all customs documentation at no additional charge, ensuring full compliance across 200+ countries.
Proper palletization prevents cargo shifting and mitigates damage claims. Industry best practices recommend following these four steps:
Base Integrity: Always inspect your wooden pallet for broken boards or protruding nails before loading. Place the heaviest boxes at the bottom to maintain a low center of gravity.
No Overhang: Ensure no boxes extend past the 48″ × 40″ edge of the pallet, as overhang reduces stacking strength by up to 30% and increases the risk of side-impact damage.
Stretch Wrapping: Use high-quality crushed-core stretch wrap. Wrap the base of the pallet at least three times, then spiral upward with a 50% overlap, finishing by securing the top layers.
Labeling: Affix clear shipping labels on all four sides of the pallet. For international sea freight, utilize waterproof label pouches to shield documents from environmental elements.
