Lithium-ion Batteries Are Classified as Hazardous Materials
All major carriers restrict lithium battery shipments via air if the battery is above a certain watt-hour threshold. For most e-bike batteries, domestic air shipping with the battery installed is not permitted. Ground shipping has more flexibility. International rules vary by country.
Domestic Ground
Most e-bikes can be shipped domestically by ground with the battery installed, provided it is protected and below the carrier’s watt-hour limit.
Air Shipping
For air shipping, the battery usually must be removed and may need to ship separately as a standalone lithium battery shipment.
Sea Freight
Sea freight offers more flexibility for e-bikes than air. Batteries can often remain installed, depending on charge state and destination regulations.

How to prepare your bicycle for shipping
The derailleur is the most commonly damaged part in bike shipping. Proper prep prevents 90% of transit damage.
Disassemble Key Components
- Remove both wheels — release quick-releases or thru-axles completely
- Let a small amount of air out of each tire
- Remove pedals carefully using the correct threading direction
- Turn handlebars sideways or remove stem to reduce box width
- Lower or remove the seatpost and saddle
- For road bikes, consider removing the rear derailleur and taping it to the frame
Protect Frame & Components
- Wrap the entire frame in bubble wrap or foam tubing
- Insert a fork spacer or dummy axle in the front fork dropouts
- Wrap the rear derailleur in thick foam
- Tape the chain to the chainstay so it cannot swing
- Protect disc rotors with cardboard sleeves
- Wrap carbon frame tubes before bubble wrap to prevent pressure cracking
Box Correctly
- Use a dedicated bike box or custom packaging
- Place wheels on either side of the frame for side protection
- Fill every gap with packing peanuts or foam blocks
- Place the heaviest items at the bottom of the box
- Seal all seams with heavy-duty tape
Label, Insure & Document
- Label all sides with full sender and recipient addresses
- Mark the box “Fragile” and “This Side Up”
- For high-value bikes, cargo insurance is strongly recommended
- Include a duplicate address label inside the box
- For international shipments, photograph the bike before boxing
